H.R. No. 177


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Youth and adults affiliated with the Venado District of the South Texas Council, Boy Scouts of America, are rendering outstanding service to their communities while enjoying the many opportunities for adventure and fellowship that scouting affords; and WHEREAS, The Venado District embraces the counties of Brooks, Jim Hogg, Kenedy, and Kleberg; at the end of 2002, this district contained eight Cub Scout packs, six Boy Scout troops, and two Venturing crews, for a total of 295 members and 119 adult leaders; and WHEREAS, Since 1987, Venado scouts have worked with other scouts in the South Texas Council to assist those in need through the Scouting for Food drive; over the years 1987-2002, these scouts collected more than 1.3 million pounds of food to benefit the hungry; and WHEREAS, In addition to their admirable public service, Venado scouts are continually mastering new skills, sometimes in the company of fellow scouts from around the country; in 2001, scouts from this district represented South Texas at the Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A. P. Hill in Virginia, and in 2002, Venado scouts were among the 700 attending the Council Camporee on the King Ranch; in the summer of 2003, Venado scouts are participating in a wide variety of activities, including the sailing camp at the Naval Air Station--Corpus Christi and programs at Camp Karankawa and Philmont High Adventure Base in New Mexico; and WHEREAS, The knowledge and self-confidence that youth develop through scouting are invaluable in helping them to lead full and rewarding lives, and society at large gains immeasurably from the talents, civic involvement, and leadership skills fostered by the scouting program; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby recognize the scouts and scout leaders of the Venado District of the South Texas Council, Boy Scouts of America, for their achievements and community service and extend sincere best wishes to them for continued success.
