R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The retirement of Robert C. "Bob" Parker, P.E., of
Val Verde County from the Texas Department of Transportation
(TxDOT) brings to a close a 32-year career of outstanding service to
the State of Texas; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Carrizo Springs, Mr. Parker
earned a degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University; he
joined the Texas Highway Department in August 1972, taking a post in
the design/construction office of the Del Rio District; and
WHEREAS, Two years later Mr. Parker transferred to what is
now the Del Rio Area Office, and in 1980 he became Del Rio Area
engineer; over the course of more than three decades, this TxDOT
veteran has worked within three different districts: Del Rio, San
Angelo, and Laredo; and
WHEREAS, With his promotion to area engineer, Mr. Parker
assumed the oversight of construction and maintenance projects in
Edwards, Real, Val Verde, and Kinney counties; since 1993, when the
Laredo District was created, he has had responsibility for the
three-county area of Maverick, Kinney, and Val Verde; and
WHEREAS, In his leisure time, Mr. Parker has immersed himself
in the rich cultural and archaeological history of the region,
devoting many hours to the study of Indian pictographs, rock
shelters, mounds, and middens; long interested in metalwork,
woodwork, and geology, he has recently begun to fashion
Indian-style artifacts using primitive tools; among the
memorabilia he most treasures are two certificates he received for
his participation in an archaeological demonstration sponsored by
the National Park Service/Whitehead Museum; and
WHEREAS, Bob Parker and his wife, Marlu, have been married
for 30 years; their two sons, Travis and Troy, are heirs to a long
tradition of TxDOT service, for, in addition to their father's
distinguished career, their paternal and maternal grandfathers
both retired from the Texas Department of Highways and Public
Transportation after 33 and 26 years, respectively; and
WHEREAS, Hundreds of transportation projects along the Rio
Grande and into the Hill Country bear the mark of Bob Parker's
engineering expertise, firm integrity, and dedication to his work,
and area citizens and countless travelers are truly in his debt;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Robert C. "Bob"
Parker, P.E., on the occasion of his retirement as Del Rio Area
engineer with the Texas Department of Transportation and extend to
him sincere appreciation for his outstanding public service; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Parker as an expression of high esteem by the Texas
House of Representatives.
