R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, August 2, 2003, marks the first anniversary of the passing of Alan Ray "Sonny" Holleyman of Sanderson, and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to remember this outstanding Texan and reflect on his many achievements; and WHEREAS, Mr. Holleyman was born in Kermit, Texas, on January 18, 1932, and he attended Monahans High School, where he was a member of the school's football team; he was raised by his maternal grandparents, "Pockets" and Minnie Jones, who instilled in him a love of the land and the cowboy lifestyle that stayed with him throughout his life; and WHEREAS, He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950, and over the course of his distinguished service he was awarded four Good Conduct medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and a Navy Unit Commendation; he received an honorable discharge from the Navy on July 2, 1969, as a master-at-arms; and WHEREAS, After leaving military service, Mr. Holleyman embarked on a varied career in law enforcement, which included employment with the Pinkerton Detective Agency, Sanger-Harris Department Store, and the Fort Worth Police Department; he graduated from Odessa's Regional Police Academy in 1985, and he joined the staff of the Terrell County Sheriff's Department shortly thereafter; in the mid 1990s, he retired as the department's chief deputy and went on to serve as the constable for Precincts 1, 3, and 4, a position he held until his passing; and WHEREAS, Mr. Holleyman was a man of dedication, courage, and integrity, and while he is greatly missed, the legacy he left behind will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Alan Ray "Sonny" Holleyman and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Christine Holleyman; to his mother, Ruth Howard; to his children, Alan R. Holleyman, Jr., Lark Raymond, and Linda Wise; to his stepchildren, Sharon E. Campbell, Athena Campbell, and Cherre Settle; to his brother, Steven Howard; to his sister, Kathi Phelan; and to his other relatives, colleagues, and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alan Ray "Sonny" Holleyman.
