R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Ruben Ramos, El Gato Negro, has made many outstanding contributions to Tejano music and to his East Austin community, and he is most deserving of special recognition; and WHEREAS, Mr. Ramos sits at the helm of a family legacy that started more than 80 years ago in post-World War I Texas; and WHEREAS, He was 16 when he began playing percussion and singing in his brother Alfonso's band, the Tejano Orquestra; entertaining audiences throughout the 1960s, the band employed a rich blend of traditional conjunto, cumbias, and rancheras supplemented with brass, electric guitar, and piano; and WHEREAS, A pioneer in the Tejano music movement, Mr. Ramos created his own band in 1971, calling it the Mexican Revolution and later, at the height of the Chicano Movement, changing the name to Texas Revolution; he and fellow band members have earned many well-deserved accolades, including honors at the 1987 Tejano Music Awards and induction into the prestigious Pura Vida Hall of Fame and the Tejano Music Awards Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, In 1998, Mr. Ramos teamed up with other musical greats David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, rocker Joe Ely, country legend Freddy Fender, accordion master Flaco Jimenez, and country crooner Rick Treviño to form Los Super Seven; their self-titled album earned a Grammy Award for the Best Mexican American Performance at the 1999 Grammy Awards ceremony; and WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Mr. Ramos has earned a reputation for being one of the best singers and bandleaders in the history of the genre, and despite a busy calendar full of headline dates, he and the Texas Revolution have reserved a place in their schedule to entertain their East Austin community at the A. B. Cantu Pan-Am Hillside Stage; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Ruben Ramos for his achievements in music and his community involvement and extend to him best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Ramos as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
