SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 9
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
to recognize Linda Escobar on the special occasion of her
induction into the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame Class of 2003 on
August 16, 2003; and
WHEREAS, Linda was born in Alice, Texas, to Eligio and
Jesusita Escobar, a truck driver and a housewife; during her
early years, Linda weathered a number of family misfortunes
before later achieving a highly successful career and fame as
a world-renowned Tejano musician; and
WHEREAS, When Linda was 10 months old, she was stricken
with polio virus and had to wear a brace for four years; when she
was three years old, her father was in a tragic accident that left
him bedridden for a year and then disabled for life; her mother
went to work in a laundry for the family's survival; and
WHEREAS, Linda's father was encouraged by family and
friends to start singing for a living; at home, while listening
to her father practice singing and playing the guitar, Linda
developed her love of music; her father later began recording,
and she would memorize his songs while hearing them on the radio;
and
WHEREAS, When she was six years old, Linda accompanied
her father as he was performing at La Villita Dance Hall in Alice
and persuaded him to let her sing; her first song in public was
"La Bola Negra," which led to an invitation to perform on KROB
radio station in Robstown and, later, to her first recording
under the Ideal record label; and
WHEREAS, She teamed up with her father, who was touring
the state in a group called Los Guadalupanos de Joey Lopez; at the
age of eight, Linda recorded her first hit song, "Los Frijolitos
Pintos," and began touring with widely acclaimed Tejano artists;
and
WHEREAS, She continued recording and performing throughout
her childhood while managing to graduate from high school; she
also married and raised two daughters and a son; she formed her
own band, Zamen, and recorded commercial jingles for several
national companies; she returned to conjunto music and recorded
"Los Hermanos Cadena"; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Linda worked with many well-known
artists and recorded under such labels as Supremo, Hacienda, and
DINA; after the death of her father, she made a commitment to
continue her career so that his music would live on through her;
and
WHEREAS, Linda Escobar came from humble beginnings and
managed to overcome difficult circumstances and become a popular
Tejano recording and award-winning artist, and she deserves
recognition for her exceptional accomplishments; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Linda Escobar
for her outstanding achievements in the music industry and her
contributions to Tejano music and extend to her congratulations
on her induction into the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
