SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 10
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the members of the Buford and Cohran families on the
special occasion of the Buford/Cohran family reunion in Dallas
on July 11-13, 2003; and
WHEREAS, The recorded history of the Cohran family name
begins in 1825 in Wilkes County, Georgia, with the will of
Elenor Hutton, who left all her property to her daughter,
Sally Cohron; among the property that was inherited by Sally Cohron
was a slave, Jenny, and Jenny's four children, Dick, Maria, Lea,
and Maryan; although spelled differently, this is how and where
the Cohran name originated; and
WHEREAS, Sally's daughter Sarah became heir to the property
and moved, with Jenny and her sons, to Mississippi; as freed
people by 1875, Jenny's family began to prosper and acquired land
in Oxford, Mississippi, some of which remains in the family
today; and
WHEREAS, Lea's son Berry Cohran had nine children; two of
his daughters, Leanna and Addie, married Bufords, thereby making
the Buford family name prominent; and
WHEREAS, The Buford and Cohran family members are successful
men and women who have contributed greatly to their communities
through their leadership, integrity, and concern for others; and
WHEREAS, The family includes four generations of teachers
beginning with Felix Cohran in the early 1900s; and
WHEREAS, The Buford/Cohran Family Reunion provides an
opportunity for family members to learn of their rich history,
celebrate their heritage, and prepare for the future; it
manifests the family's pride in its heritage and its commitment
to family unity and loyalty; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend best wishes
to the members of the Buford and Cohran families for a joyous
