SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 11
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Dr. Frank N. Bash on the occasion of his retirement as director of McDonald Observatory, which is operated by The University of Texas at Austin; and WHEREAS, Dr. Bash has been director of McDonald Observatory since 1991 and was interim director from 1989 to 1991; and WHEREAS, He holds a bachelor's degree from Willamette University, a master's degree from Harvard University, and a doctoral degree from the University of Virginia; and WHEREAS, Dr. Bash came to The University of Texas at Austin in 1967 as a postdoctoral researcher; a well-known and widely published specialist in radio astronomy, he became a member of the faculty in 1969 and served as chairman of the Department of Astronomy from 1982 to 1986; he was named to UTMost magazine's Teaching Excellence Hall of Fame in 1984 and in 1985 was named the Frank N. Edmunds Regents Professor of Astronomy; and WHEREAS, During his tenure at McDonald Observatory, Dr. Bash led the effort for the design, funding, and construction of the 11-meter Hobby-Eberly Telescope, the largest telescope in the world specializing in the study of light through spectroscopy; he has expanded public outreach programs, which include the visitors' center, which hosts around 130,000 visitors a year, a bimonthly magazine, and the syndicated two-minute "StarDate" radio show heard by millions of people each day in English, Spanish, and German; and WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Frank Bash, McDonald Observatory has earned a reputation as one of the world's foremost astronomical research institutions and as a pioneer in public outreach and informal science education; and WHEREAS, Dr. Bash is highly respected by his students and his colleagues in the field of astronomy, and he is truly worthy of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Dr. Frank N. Bash for his outstanding service and extend to him best wishes for his future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
