SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 12
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Mary Hull Caballero for her outstanding contributions
as executive director of the Community Scholars program of
El Paso; and
WHEREAS, The Community Scholars program provides high
school and college students with opportunities during the
summer to study and report on vital community issues; grants
from Levi Strauss & Company, Southwestern Bell Company, and
other corporations support the program, and students earn a
modest salary to work on individual and group research projects
that affect the future of El Paso; and
WHEREAS, Mary Caballero has devoted her energy, time, and
leadership skills to ensure the success of the program; she is
highly respected as a hard-working, organized, and innovative
mentor who is deeply committed to the program goals; and
WHEREAS, Under her capable leadership, students have
succeeded in carrying out valuable research to the benefit of
their city; nine Community Scholars program participants were
recognized with the James Rouse Excellence in Achievement
Award for Emerging Leaders given by the National Community
Reinvestment Coalition for their report on banking and small
business lending in El Paso; the young scholars' study spurred
the local banking community to hold a small business lending
summit to further discuss the students' findings; and
WHEREAS, Through her efforts to involve these young
Texans in projects that are significant to their community's
welfare, Mary has played a major role in the betterment of
the City of El Paso and helped the students to understand the
value of education; her dedication reflects her commitment
to encouraging young people to participate in meaningful
community service; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend
Mary Hull Caballero for her exemplary leadership of the
Community Scholars program and extend best wishes to her for
continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
