SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 15
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Chief Warrant Officer David S. Williams for his outstanding service to his country during Operation Iraqi Freedom; and WHEREAS, David Williams is from Orlando, Florida; he graduated from Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, in 1991; he attended a community college in Florida and enlisted in the United States Army in 1993; and WHEREAS, David Williams was commissioned a warrant officer in 1998, earned his Army aviator wings in 1999, and served with an Apache helicopter unit for three years in Korea; following his tour there, he served with an Apache Longbow helicopter unit and became a qualified Longbow instructor pilot; he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment in Fort Hood, Texas, in October of 2002; and WHEREAS, On March 23, 2003, Chief Warrant Officer Williams's battalion was sent to attack military targets associated with the Iraqi Republican Guard; during the battle, enemy forces shot down the helicopter that he and Ronald D. Young were piloting while on a mission in support of coalition ground troops, and both soldiers were taken captive; and WHEREAS, The period during David Williams's incarceration as a prisoner of war was filled with great sorrow for his family and for his colleagues and countrymen; and WHEREAS, The day of April 13, 2003, dawned with the remarkable news that Chief Warrant Officer Williams was one of seven American prisoners of war who had been found in Iraq by the American forces; his family and citizens throughout the nation were filled with jubilation over the release of this fine soldier and his compatriots; and WHEREAS, For his exemplary and loyal military service, David Williams has been awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Aviator Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the Air Assault Badge; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Chief Warrant Officer David S. Williams for his loyal service to the United States of America and join citizens across our country in rejoicing in his safe return home to his family; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
