SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 70
In Memory
of
Hiram Elliott
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Port Arthur in mourning the loss of Hiram Elliott, who died recently at the age of 91; and WHEREAS, Mr. Elliott was a native of Crockett and had resided in Port Arthur since 1937; he enjoyed a happy marriage to Mary Edna Elliott for more than 61 years; and WHEREAS, Hiram was a decorated veteran who served his country in World War II and the Korean War; he earned a Purple Heart for his service during the Battle of the Bulge; he also earned a Bronze Star for his service in the Rhineland; and WHEREAS, A member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 56, he was the longest surviving continuous member of the Disabled American Veterans in the United States; and WHEREAS, Hiram Elliott was an engineer and was employed for 36 years with the Texaco Research Laboratory; and WHEREAS, An exemplary citizen, Hiram was respected in the community for his leadership and participation in civic affairs; he served as judge of the town of Griffing Park, as a Boy Scout master, as president of the Region V United States Civil Defense Council, and as a member of several other local organizations; and WHEREAS, Known for living his life to the fullest, Hiram relished waking early and driving to Bruce's Market Basket, one of his favorite places, to enjoy coffee and conversation with friends; he and Mary had lunch at Bruce's each Friday as well; and WHEREAS, Noted for his self-sufficiency and generosity of spirit, Mr. Elliott never asked for anything from anybody, yet he never hesitated to help anyone in need; his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced his faith in his daily life, Hiram was a member of Saint James Catholic Church and of the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 1340; and WHEREAS, Hiram Elliott was a devoted husband and brother, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Hiram Elliott: his wife, Mary Edna Elliott, and his sister, Helen Gilbert; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Hiram Elliott.
