SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 74
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Bettie J. Agnew, who has retired from the Houston Independent School District after 43 years of distinguished service as a school librarian; and WHEREAS, Bettie will be honored for her long career and her dedication to her work at a July 27, 2003, celebration sponsored by her family at Brady's Landing Restaurant in Houston; and WHEREAS, Educated in the schools of Coldspring, Texas, Bettie was fortunate to grow up amply supplied with books and other learning materials; she earned a bachelor's degree at Prairie View A&M University in 1959, and she earned a master's degree in library science from Atlanta University in 1965; and WHEREAS, Beginning in 1959, Bettie dedicated herself to a career as a librarian in the Houston Independent School District, ably serving at several elementary schools until 1979; she then served as the librarian for the Barbara Jordan High School for Careers from 1979 to 2003; and WHEREAS, Throughout her career, she provided students with high-quality resources and information that would enable them to achieve academically and become lifelong learners; and WHEREAS, Bettie also has served as a leader in a number of professional organizations; notably, she has been secretary of the Texas Association of School Librarians, president of the Houston Association of School Librarians, and treasurer of the Texas Library Association's Black Caucus; and WHEREAS, Bettie has distinguished herself in her field and has received a number of honors for her outstanding work; she was recognized as Librarian of the Year by the Houston Independent School District for the academic year of 1994-1995; and WHEREAS, Bettie has long held the high regard of her colleagues for her professionalism, her leadership, and her loyal service to countless students during her long career, and her presence with the Houston Independent School District will be greatly missed; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Bettie J. Agnew for her exemplary service as a school librarian and extend best wishes to her for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
