SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 81
In Memory
of
Edward Elliott, Jr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Edward Elliott, Jr., who died July 7, 2003, at the age of 72; and WHEREAS, Edward was born to Sarah Livingston Elliott and Edward Elliott, Sr., on October 15, 1930; he grew up in Groesbeck and graduated from Groesbeck High School in 1947; he served in the United States Army, where he was a member of the 7871 Elite Guard, a drill and demonstration platoon; and WHEREAS, Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 1953, Edward attended Prairie View A&M University, where he excelled in academics and sports; he earned a bachelor of science degree and a master of education degree as well as a certificate in school administration; and WHEREAS, Edward began his career in education in College Station and went on to devote himself to more than 40 years as a teacher and coach; among his many accomplishments was coaching one basketball team that won the state championship in 1960 and his successful integration of the National Aquatic Schools in Texas; and WHEREAS, In Austin, where he moved in 1966, he served as a coach at the old Anderson High School and at Lanier High School; he also served as dean of boys at Reagan High School, as assistant principal of Lanier High School and Burnet Junior High School, and as principal of Bedichek Middle School; and WHEREAS, Edward Elliott was a member of several professional and civic organizations, including Austin School Administrators, the Texas Coaching Association, and Prince Hall Grand Lodge; and WHEREAS, He was a devout Christian who practiced his faith in his daily life; he was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Bryan and the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Austin; in 1975, he was confirmed as a member of Saint James Episcopal Church in Austin; and WHEREAS, A man highly regarded for his personal integrity, Edward touched the lives of many people through his qualities of patience, compassion, and humility; and WHEREAS, Edward was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Edward Elliott, Jr.: his wife, Geneva; his sons, Ricky and William; his daughters, Tasha and JoAnn; and his granddaughters, Brisha and Roxanne; and his five great-grandchildren; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Edward Elliott, Jr. Barrientos ________________________________ President of the Senate I hereby certify that the above Resolution was adopted by the Senate on July 18, 2003, by a rising vote. ________________________________ Secretary of the Senate ________________________________ Member, Texas Senate
