SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 86
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay tribute to the life of David Rucker, an early pioneer in Travis County, who distinguished himself as a Buffalo Soldier in the United States Infantry and who aided in the construction of the Texas State Capitol; and WHEREAS, David and other members of the Rucker and Collins families who served in the military will be honored at a special ceremony conducted by the Buffalo Soldiers Association during the Rucker and Collins family reunion October 9 through 12, 2003; and WHEREAS, David Rucker was born a slave in Tennessee on December 15, 1846, and moved to Texas as a child; he learned to read and write early in his life and became a lifelong avid reader and strong advocate of education; and WHEREAS, He enlisted in the United States Infantry in 1867 and reenlisted in 1869, serving until 1870 as a Buffalo Soldier during the Indian wars; he served his country honorably and with courage; and WHEREAS, On March 13, 1887, at the age of 41, he married Ida Perry, a schoolteacher and midwife; the couple had 12 children, six of whom attended college; and WHEREAS, David Rucker died March 11, 1924, and left an admirable legacy for his descendants who have become successful and productive citizens in their communities; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor the memory of David Rucker for his service to his country and his many contributions to the Central Texas community; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
