SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 100

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 
recognize Calvin Smith, a participant in the Texas Reading Club 
who has read 50 books for pleasure; and

	WHEREAS, Calvin attends Alamo Heights Junior School in 
San Antonio; his teachers have encouraged him and his fellow 
students to read for pleasure and develop a lifelong love of 
books; and

	WHEREAS, The Texas Reading Club is a project of the 
Texas State Library and Archives Commission which seeks to foster 
children's love of reading and promote the use of libraries; 
since the club began in 1959, millions of young Texans have been 
encouraged to read for pleasure, especially during the summer 
months when they are on vacation from school; and

	WHEREAS, Each year a statewide theme for the club is 
selected; the 2003 theme is "Mission Possible: Spy a Book!" and 
focuses the attention of readers on history, culture, adventure, 
partnerships and pen pals, and spies and secret codes; and

	WHEREAS, Through reading 50 books for fun, Calvin has 
demonstrated a deep commitment to the goals of the Texas Reading 
Club; now, therefore, be it

	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 
78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Calvin Smith
on his achievement and extend best wishes to him for his future 
reading adventures; and, be it further

	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
