SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 127
WHEREAS, Jimmy Earl Alford of Huntsville, director of Region I of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, is retiring August 31, 2003, after 29 years of outstanding public service; and WHEREAS, Mr. Alford began his career with the department as a correctional officer in the Coffield Unit in September 1972; over the years he has also worked at the Wynne, Ellis I, Beto, Eastham, and Michael units and at the Training Academy, winning a long series of promotions through his skilled leadership and dedication; he accepted the post of regional director in October 2000, assuming the oversight of 15 adult correctional institutions; and WHEREAS, A graduate of Sam Houston State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in criminology and corrections, Mr. Alford has also done graduate work, with an emphasis on mental retardation, at Stephen F. Austin State University; in addition, he has attended numerous professional seminars and training programs, exploring such topics as problem analysis, management, drug interdiction, and hostage negotiations; and WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Alford has given generously of his time and expertise within the community, serving on the board of directors of the Young Men's Christian Association in Palestine from 1993 to 1995 and as an instructor for prospective employees of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice at Trinity Valley Community College from 1987 to 2000; he has also been a valued member of the Masonic Lodge, Tyre 198, Tennessee Colony; and WHEREAS, Mr. Alford and his wife, Jeanette, are the proud parents of a daughter, Kelli, and a son, Chris; and WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Jimmy Earl Alford has brought to his responsibilities with the department an unwavering integrity and a steadfast commitment to the highest standards of his demanding profession, and he has earned the respect and esteem of colleagues and area citizens alike; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Jimmy Earl Alford on the occasion of his retirement as director of Region I of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and extend to him deep appreciation for his exemplary service to the people of Texas; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared for Mr. Alford as an expression of high regard by the Texas Senate.
