H.R. No. 3
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Karen Holcombe was accorded a great honor when she
was selected to receive an honorable mention as part of the Texas
Council for the Humanities' 2003 Outstanding Teaching of the
Humanities Awards; and
WHEREAS, Presented to only six teachers, this prestigious
honor acknowledges outstanding contributions to teaching,
curriculum development, and extracurricular programs in the fields
of art, drama, history, literature, foreign languages, government,
and social studies; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Holcombe has inspired, guided, and illuminated
the lives of her students at Birdville High School in North Richland
Hills, bringing enthusiasm, encouragement, and considerable
expertise to her composite social studies and advanced placement
U.S. history classes; and
WHEREAS, This exemplary educator attended the University of
North Texas, where she received a bachelor's degree in science in
1974, and remained at that university to pursue a master of science
degree, which she earned in 1978; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Holcombe is active in numerous professional
associations, including the National, Texas, and Mid-Cities
Councils for the Social Studies and the Association of Texas
Professional Educators; greatly respected by students and
colleagues alike, she has been named Birdville High School Teacher
of the Year 2002 and Birdville ISD High School Teacher of the Year
2002 and was awarded more than $17,000 in Innovative Teaching
Grants by the Educational Foundation of Birdville ISD; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Holcombe challenges her students to think and
act with confidence, courage, and independence, and her lasting
contributions to their educations and futures are indeed worthy of
special recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Karen
Holcombe on receiving an honorable mention as part of the 2003
Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Awards and extend to her
sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Ms. Holcombe as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
