R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A 90th birthday is truly cause for a celebration, and on July 21, 2003, Alceste Cerwinske of Houston marked this significant occasion in her life; and WHEREAS, Born on July 21, 1913, in Alta, Iowa, she was a music major graduate of Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, after which she embarked on a high school teaching career before her marriage; and WHEREAS, This lovely lady married Herbert Cerwinske on December 28, 1938, and the couple will celebrate their 65th anniversary this year; their rewarding relationship is blessed with a fine family, including three daughters, who moved with their parents in 1952 from Montclair, New Jersey, to Houston; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Cerwinske was employed with the Spring Branch Independent School District for many years in roles that included substitute teacher, census taker, test grader, and recordkeeper; her volunteer activities have included serving as a church organist and as an organist accompanying a choral group that performed at area nursing homes, and she was active in PTA and drill team and band booster groups, and as a homeroom mother during her children's school years; and WHEREAS, A charter member of The Country Playhouse, a community theater in the Spring Branch/Memorial area that was founded in 1956, Mrs. Cerwinske continues to play an active role in the organization and currently coordinates volunteers to staff the refreshment stand during productions; over the course of her extensive involvement with the organization, she performed in numerous plays, handled administrative duties, and served as box office chair for 15 years; and WHEREAS, Another venue in which this civic-minded individual continues to benefit her community is by working a volunteer shift three days a week at a resale shop sponsored by a local church; and WHEREAS, For nine decades, Alceste Cerwinske has lived a life full of caring and generosity; her warmth and wisdom enrich the lives of countless Texans and she is cherished by her family and host of friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Alceste Cerwinske on the joyous occasion of her 90th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Cerwinske as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
