H.R. No. 26 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The distinguished career of Coach Ken Dabbs has been duly recognized with his induction into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor; and WHEREAS, A talented multisport athlete, Coach Dabbs played football, baseball, track, and tennis at Freer High School, graduating in 1951; he went on to earn a bachelor of science degree from Sam Houston State University, and in 1973 he received a master's degree in education from the University of North Texas; and WHEREAS, Coach Dabbs took his first athletics job at Bellville High School, where as assistant coach he helped lead the Brahmas to the State 2A quarterfinals; in 1958, Sweeny High School hired him to be head track coach and assistant football coach, and during his tenure there Coach Dabbs led the Bulldogs to eight district and three regional track championships and played a vital role in the school's 1966 state football championship; and WHEREAS, Transferring to Irving High School, Coach Dabbs obtained his first head football coaching position and also served as athletic director; under his guidance, the Tigers reached the State 4A quarterfinals with an impressive 11-2 season record; following his success in Irving, Coach Dabbs moved to Austin to become head football coach and athletic director at Westlake High School; and WHEREAS, In 1973, Coach Dabbs entered the realm of college sports, taking a job as assistant football coach and recruiting coordinator for The University of Texas at Austin, where from 1973 to 1983 he helped the Longhorns win five Southwest Conference Championships and 10 bowl games; in 1984, he became the assistant athletic director for football and facility operations at UT, continuing in that position until his retirement in 1995; and WHEREAS, A devoted husband to his wife, Marguerite, and the proud father of three sons, Bob, Bryan, and Doug, Coach Dabbs is currently employed as the regional sales manager for SRI Sports, where the experience he garnered during four decades in the sports profession continues to benefit others; and WHEREAS, The tradition of excellence that Coach Dabbs established throughout his coaching career left an indelible mark on Texas high school and college sports, and it is indeed fitting to pay tribute to this esteemed individual at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Coach Ken Dabbs on his induction into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor and extend to him best wishes for continued happiness and good fortune; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Coach Dabbs as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
