R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A golden wedding anniversary is a significant
milestone in a couple's marriage, and on May 2, 2003, Mitchell Lee
and Melba Jean Archer marked this memorable occasion with a
family-hosted reception at Sand Hill Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, The couple met in 1952 when Mr. Archer, a member of
the United States Marine Corps, was treated for injuries sustained
during the Korean War by the former Melba Jean Shaw, a member of the
United States Navy Nurse Corps; joined in marriage on May 2, 1953,
in North Carolina, the couple's relationship serves as a source of
joy and inspiration to their family, which includes their children,
Michael and James Archer, and their grandchildren, Angela Marie
Archer and Eric Lee Archer; and
WHEREAS, A native of Roanoke, Virginia, Mr. Archer also
served his country with distinction during the Cuban missile crisis
and the Vietnam War, and he retired in 1969 from the Marines
following a notable 23-year career; the family moved to New Mexico,
where Mr. Archer was employed with the Albuquerque National Bank
and Mrs. Archer continued her nursing career with the VA hospital;
following their retirement in 1987, the couple moved to the Sand
Hill community, where Mrs. Archer grew up; and
WHEREAS, Today, Big Daddy and Big Momma, as they are
affectionately called by family and friends, have accumulated many
happy memories of travels across the globe, and they are active
members of an RV travel club, the Rose City Sams; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Archer have shared the trials and
triumphs of five decades together, and it is truly a pleasure to pay
tribute to them for their enduring union; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Mitchell Lee
and Melba Jean Archer on the joyous occasion of their 50th wedding
anniversary and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued
happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Archer as an expression of high regard by
the Texas House of Representatives.
