H.R. No. 55 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Josefina Tinajero has been named dean of the College of Education at The University of Texas at El Paso, and this well-deserved appointment provides a fitting opportunity to recognize this remarkable woman and her many significant accomplishments; and WHEREAS, Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, Dr. Tinajero moved to El Paso at the age of five; though she was unable to speak English when she entered school, through determination and hard work she mastered the language and graduated as valedictorian of Father Yermo High School; and WHEREAS, Inspired by her educational experiences, Dr. Tinajero became active in bilingual education and teacher reform; in 1986, she founded the Mother-Daughter program, which encourages female Hispanic students to finish high school and attend college; since its inception, the program has grown from 33 participants to 300, and a Father-Son program has also been established for young Hispanic men; and WHEREAS, This notable woman is committed to preparing the bilingual educators of tomorrow and has received funding from the U.S. Department of Education, allowing her to establish Project BEEMS (Bilingual Educators with an Emphasis on Math and Science) and Project CBTL (Cultivating Bilingual Teachers and Leaders); each of these important programs will help to ensure the success of bilingual students in Texas for years to come; and WHEREAS, Duly recognized for her many contributions to bilingual education, Dr. Tinajero was named the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Texas Professor of the Year in 2002 and a recipient of the National Multicultural Educator Award from the National Association of Multicultural Education; and WHEREAS, Dr. Tinajero's appointment as dean is a tremendous credit to the vision and ability of this accomplished educator, and her strong and skillful leadership will greatly benefit The University of Texas at El Paso and students of the College of Education; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Dr. Josefina Tinajero on her appointment as dean of the College of Education at The University of Texas at El Paso and commend her for the positive impact she has made on bilingual education in the Lone Star State; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Tinajero as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
