H.R. No. 65
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The family and many friends of Barbara Gray were
deeply saddened by the untimely passing of this remarkable woman on
July 27, 2003, at the age of 53; and
WHEREAS, Born in rural South Dakota, Ms. Gray knew from a
young age that she would one day become a lawyer, even in a time when
few women were welcomed into the profession; after earning a
bachelor's degree from The University of Texas at Austin, she
taught English in Panama for two years before attending the
University of Houston Law Center, where she was an honor student and
a member of the law review; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional woman earned the third highest
score among hundreds taking the Texas bar examination and went on to
become the first female partner at the respected Lidell Sapp law
firm; highly regarded for her integrity and ability, she worked in
various executive positions in the legal department of Enron
Capital and Trade, and her outstanding ability earned her the
respect and admiration of all who worked with her; and
WHEREAS, A woman who cherished her faith and family, she
enjoyed worshiping at St. Philip Presbyterian Church in Houston and
the First Presbyterian Church of Navasota and often volunteered for
CanCare Ministries; she was a proud and devoted mother to her
children and stepchildren and adored her husband, Ed; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Gray was blessed with unshakeable strength
and an indomitable spirit that enabled her to courageously battle
cancer; she leaves a legacy of wisdom, genuine compassion, and
unselfish love for others that will remain treasured by those
fortunate enough to have shared her life, and she will be greatly
missed; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Barbara Gray and extend sincere sympathy to her family: to her
husband, Ed; to her children, Whitney and Max; to her stepchildren,
Erin, Brian, and his wife, Stephanie; to her parents, Milo and Jean
Nelson; to her grandchildren, Jacy, Jenna, and Jordan; to her
sisters and brother-in-law, Betty and Robert Sanders and Becky
Truitt; to her brother and sister-in-law, Brad and Nila Nelson; and
to the other relatives and many friends of this beloved woman; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Barbara
Gray.
