R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Pastor James Raynard Miller of Houston has long worked for the betterment of his church and community, and it is indeed appropriate that he should be honored for his many contributions as a minister and civic leader at a special service on October 5, 2003; and WHEREAS, A native of Corpus Christi, he is a graduate of Moody High School and attended Del Mar College for a year before enrolling at Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he majored in religion from 1978 to 1982; in addition, he completed a summer internship in religion at Harvard Divinity School; and WHEREAS, Called to the gospel ministry at the tender age of six, this faith-filled gentleman has been preaching for 37 years; he served as assistant to the pastor of St. John Baptist Church in Corpus Christi before beginning a 17-year pastoral tenure at Friendship Baptist Church; since August 2000, he has guided the membership of First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Houston; and WHEREAS, The wisdom and counsel of Pastor Miller have benefited numerous professional and community organizations, including the American Baptist Western District Congress, of which he is president, and the Corpus Christi Human Relations Commission, which he served as a member; Pastor Miller serves on the evangelism board of the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc., and is executive secretary of the American Baptist Western District Association; he also has been affiliated with the Sonshine Gospel Hour, the Feed the People ministry, and several citywide seminars; and WHEREAS, This devoted family man enjoys the love and support of his wife, Sonja Perry Winchester Miller, and their five children; and WHEREAS, In serving his church and his community, Pastor Miller has provided an inspiring role model of faith, integrity, and compassion, and he is most deserving of the profound esteem in which he is held; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend Pastor James Raynard Miller for his dedicated service to First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and extend to him heartfelt best wishes for continued success and fulfillment; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Pastor Miller as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
