R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Bich-Ngoc Nguyen of Houston has rendered outstanding service to others through her support of numerous civic and cultural causes; and WHEREAS, A noted businesswoman, Ms. Nguyen has owned several beauty salons since she and her husband, Dr. Vu Ban, arrived in Houston from Vietnam in 1975; these have included the Blue Jade Beauty Center, which she first opened in Saigon in the 1960s and which she continues to operate in the Bayou City; and WHEREAS, Ms. Nguyen has long encouraged an ideal among Vietnamese women that emphasizes confidence, assertiveness, and a sense of well-being; through the years, she has helped many young women to develop poise and self-reliance through her sponsorship of numerous beauty pageants; and WHEREAS, Together with her husband, Ms. Nguyen is the recent founder of the Miss Vietnamese Free World Pageant, an international event that draws contestants from around the world; the 2003 pageant was held at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts in Houston on July 19 and featured musical performances by Vietnamese artists from the U.S., Germany, and France; in addition to the prizes conferred on the winner and first two runners-up, awards were bestowed for community service, academic excellence, and best traditional costume; and WHEREAS, Ms. Nguyen has also supported an array of community institutions, among them hospitals, clinics, Buddhist temples, Catholic churches, and schools; in appreciation for her notable civic involvement, the mayor of Houston proclaimed May 8, 2003, as Bich Ngoc Day; and WHEREAS, Bich-Ngoc Nguyen has promoted the preservation and appreciation of Vietnamese culture in her new homeland while helping first- and second-generation Vietnamese American women to successfully bridge their two cultures; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby recognize Bich-Ngoc Nguyen for her many achievements and community contributions and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Nguyen as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
