R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of longtime Austinite Javier G. Corona on July 19, 2003, at the age of 76, brought a great loss to the family, friends, and fellow citizens of this former diplomat and renowned restaurateur; and WHEREAS, Born on April 20, 1927, in Mexico City, Mr. Corona came to Austin with his family in 1982 and established Las Palomas Restaurant on Valentine's Day the following year; one of the first Austin restaurants to offer authentic interior Mexican cuisine, Las Palomas features the recipes of Amelia Corona, Mr. Corona's wife of 43 years, and it remains one of the city's most highly regarded and popular dining establishments; and WHEREAS, A man of artistic and musical talent, Mr. Corona studied art in Mexico City and New York City, but not before earning degrees in accounting and advertising in order to appease his father; he later entered the world of diplomacy, working at the Mexican Consulate in Montreal for three years and then embarking on a 28-year career as a cultural attaché at the American Embassy in Mexico City; and WHEREAS, Mr. Corona was a dedicated promoter of American arts and artists, and his efforts in that regard were recognized when he was presented with the Superior Honor Award, the highest accolade bestowed on a Mexican citizen by the United States government; he retired from diplomatic service in 1982 and moved his family to Austin shortly thereafter; and WHEREAS, Javier Corona played many roles during his long and fruitful life, but none was more important than his role as husband and father; although he will be deeply missed by his wife and children, his spirit will shine on in their hearts and in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him; his art and artistry remain as a reminder of his talent, and his legacy of success will not soon be forgotten by the citizens of Austin; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Javier G. Corona and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Amelia Corona; to his children, Amelia Pitchford, Maricarmen Dale, Javier Corona, Jr., and Alexandra Corona; to his sisters, Mireya Gonzalez and Hilda Vergara; to his grandchildren, Alex Dale, Chris Dale, Sterling Pitchford, and Javier Corona III; and to the many other relatives and friends of this esteemed and beloved gentleman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Javier G. Corona.
