H.R. No. 122


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Pamela W. Terry of Rosenberg, whose work with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service has earned her widespread appreciation and esteem, is retiring August 31, 2003, following an outstanding 26-year career with that agency; and WHEREAS, Ms. Terry joined the extension service in 1977 as a county extension agent; she served as program leader for home economics in Waller County for two years before accepting an assignment as program leader for family and consumer sciences in Fort Bend County in 1979; under her dynamic leadership, the extension service in Fort Bend County has become a respected resource for the development of crucial life skills; and WHEREAS, One of Ms. Terry's major accomplishments has been the establishment of a program to help people become more responsible and effective parents; involving a broad coalition of agencies, organizations, and individuals, the program has reached more than 10,000 participants since its inception in 1990, with classes offered in English and in Spanish; Ms. Terry has also played an instrumental role in the creation of programs to dissuade teenagers from using smokeless tobacco and to assist Hispanic residents who are diabetic to understand and manage their disease; and WHEREAS, Tireless in her efforts at public outreach, Ms. Terry has written several hundred newspaper columns and articles, produced a variety of informational publications and exhibits, and created instructional videotapes, slides, kits, and packaged programs; moreover, she has written a number of successful grant proposals to help fund various extension projects; and WHEREAS, The impact of Ms. Terry's commitment and expertise has been felt far beyond the borders of Fort Bend County, for she has been actively involved in the professional development of extension agents at the district, state, and national levels; in addition, she has given unstintingly of her time to numerous professional organizations and committees, frequently in a leadership capacity; and WHEREAS, Pamela Terry has likewise devoted untold hours to community organizations that promote the health and well-being of area citizens; she has chaired the Fort Bend County Health Council, chaired the board of the Mental Health Association of Fort Bend County, served on the board of the American Heart Association in western Fort Bend County, and served on various committees and councils of the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District; she has also worked as a volunteer with a number of projects of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; and WHEREAS, The recipient of a host of accolades, this outstanding Texan has been recognized by community, charitable, and professional groups alike; among the most recent honors to be conferred on Ms. Terry was a 2002 Continued Excellence Award, one of the most prestigious awards presented by the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; and WHEREAS, Throughout her distinguished career, Ms. Terry has enjoyed the love and support of her husband, Jim, and sons, A. J. and Steve; and WHEREAS, For more than two decades, the extraordinary contributions made by Pamela Terry have benefited countless lives and strengthened the social fabric of Fort Bend County, and for all that she has done in behalf of her fellow citizens she is profoundly treasured; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby warmly commend Pamela W. Terry on the occasion of her retirement from the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and extend to her sincere gratitude for her exemplary public service; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Terry as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
