R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, B. G. "Bill" Hartley of Tyler has provided nearly 29
years of exemplary service to the board of trustees of Texas
College, and his work in behalf of the school as well as the
community is truly commendable; and
WHEREAS, A native of Mount Pleasant who served for nine years
in the Texas National Guard, Mr. Hartley has enjoyed a successful
career as a banker; he began his career at Guaranty Bond State Bank
in Mount Pleasant, and in 1955, he joined the Texas Banking
Department in Austin, where he worked until 1960, when he moved to
Tyler and opened Southside Bank; over the years, Mr. Hartley has led
Southside Bank through periods of tremendous growth and progress,
transforming the banking operation from one location with nine
employees into an enterprise composed of 21 banking centers and 540
employees; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished banker has augmented his notable
banking career with active involvement in numerous professional
associations on the state level, serving in such significant roles
as chairman of the Texas Bankers General Agency and Texas Taxpayers
and Research Association; he has also lent his leadership skills to
the Texas Banking Department Commissioner's Council and Bankers
Multistate Insurance in Oklahoma; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hartley has faithfully contributed his time and
talents toward the betterment of his community as well; his
extensive service includes membership on the development boards of
The University of Texas at Tyler and The University of Texas Health
Center at Tyler; he has ably filled the positions of director for
East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System, trustee for
the Fair Foundation, and director and president of the Texas Rose
Festival; and
WHEREAS, Shining brightly among his public service endeavors
are his many years of sterling commitment to Texas College as an
esteemed member of the board of trustees; for nearly three decades,
he has generously dedicated himself to bringing his experience and
knowledge to the benefit of students of that noted institution of
higher education; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hartley has been duly recognized for his civic
work, with his receipt of the East Texas Area Council's
Distinguished Citizen Award; moreover, he and his beloved wife,
Billie, earned the 1992 T. B. Butler Award as Tyler's most
outstanding citizens and the 2001 East Texas Communities Foundation
Philanthropy Day Award as outstanding volunteer fund-raisers; and
WHEREAS, In addition to exemplifying the highest ideals of
community service and demonstrating admirable dedication and hard
work in his professional life, Mr. Hartley has left an indelible
impression on the field of education, specifically through his
longtime service to Texas College, earning him the respect of his
fellow citizens as well as this most deserved legislative
commendation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby honor B. G. "Bill" Hartley
for his many years of outstanding service to Texas College, his
community, and his state and extend to him best wishes for continued
success and happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Hartley as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
