R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family and friends of Dr. Sam A. Nixon of Houston
were profoundly saddened by the passing of this esteemed physician,
educator, and administrator on August 17, 2003; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Nixon was born in Galveston on June 28, 1927, and
he graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor of science
degree in 1946; he earned his medical degree from The University of
Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and had a rotating internship at
Fordham Hospital in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he was
stationed in Korea, Japan, and Texas; he established a successful
private practice caring for patients in Floresville and Nixon for
23 years and then moved to Houston to be a professor in the
Department of Family Practice and Community Medicine at The
University of Texas at Houston; and
WHEREAS, Maintaining a strong commitment to medical
education, he worked as a faculty associate for the Center for
Health Promotion Research and Development at The University of
Texas at Houston, as assistant dean of continuing education at The
University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and as director of
the Office of Continuing Medical Education at The University of
Texas Health Science Center at Houston; and
WHEREAS, Benefiting others with his experience and
leadership skills, Dr. Nixon served as president of the Texas
Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP), the American Academy of Family
Physicians, the Texas Medical Association (TMA), and the Houston
Academy of Medicine; and
WHEREAS, His professional contributions also included
working as a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and
an editor of Texas Health Letter; furthermore, Dr. Nixon belonged
to the board of regents of the Uniformed Services University of
Health Sciences, the advisory committee of the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, which he also served as consultant, and the
Harris County and Gonzales County medical societies; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed physician was duly honored with the
2002 TAFP Lifetime Achievement Award and the 1999 TMA Distinguished
Service Award; he also received the 1991 American Medical
Association Award for Health Education and the 1982 Ashbel Smith
Distinguished Alumnus Award of The University of Texas Medical
Branch; and
WHEREAS, Through many years of dedication to the field of
medicine, as both a practitioner and an educator, Dr. Nixon
positively affected the lives of countless individuals, and his
legacy will endure through his many good works; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Dr. Sam A. Nixon and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
family: to his wife, Elizabeth Nixon; to his four daughters, Alice
Nixon, Betsy Carrell, Jano Nixon, and Dorothy Robinson; and to his
other relatives and numerous friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Sam A.
Nixon.
