R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Robert H. Hester of Dallas on August 15, 2003, at the age of 77, brought a great loss to the family, friends, and fellow citizens of this noted civic leader; and WHEREAS, Born in Groesbeck on November 7, 1925, Mr. Hester earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture and veterinary science from Prairie View A&M University in 1944 and went on to further his studies at Michigan State University and North Texas State University; and WHEREAS, A dedicated proponent of the power of education, Mr. Hester taught vocational agriculture at high schools in Calvert and Centerville; well aware that earning a diploma was just one part of the equation for success, he taught his daughters and his students that "a degree is just a license to hunt . . . not a guarantee"; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hester worked as an economist with the Department of Agriculture and owned a real estate and construction business before signing on with the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Fort Worth in 1964; he later worked for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as a compliance supervisor and affirmative action manager and served as an education consultant with the Department of Justice before retiring in 1990; and WHEREAS, An active community leader, he was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, which he served as lay reader, chalice bearer, treasurer, and senior warden; he was a lifetime member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the Parent Teacher Association as well as a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Juda Masonic Lodge in Groesbeck; in addition, he maintained a lengthy affiliation with the Boy Scouts of America, the Black United Dallas Government Employees Organization, and the Southern Christian Leadership Council; and WHEREAS, Robert H. Hester was a man of faith, generosity, and honor, and although he will be missed by all who knew him, his spirit will live on in their hearts and minds for many years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Robert H. Hester and extend sincere sympathy to his family: to his wife, Pinkie M. Hester; to his daughters, Rhonda Hester Green and Rubidel Hester Peoples; to his four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and to the many other relatives and friends of this esteemed gentleman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Robert H. Hester.
