R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Over the course of an illustrious career in law, business, and public service, the Honorable Robert F. Barnes of Hidalgo County has proven himself to be a man of great dedication, integrity, and distinction; and WHEREAS, A native of Danville, Illinois, Judge Barnes learned the value of community service at an early age, earning the notable rank of Eagle Scout before embarking on his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois; and WHEREAS, During World War II he answered his nation's call to duty and served as an infantry platoon leader, later transferring to the United States Air Force to pilot P-51s in the Pacific theater of operations; on his return to civilian life, he came to the Laredo area to build a successful business in customhouse brokerage, Robert F. Barnes Custom Broker, and by 1948 had completed his doctor of jurisprudence degree at the University of Illinois College of Law; and WHEREAS, In the ensuing decades, Judge Barnes has given generously of his time and resources to assist charities and civic groups in the city of McAllen, including the First United Methodist Church, the International Toll Bridge Board, the Emergency Ambulance Committee, and both the Chamber of Commerce and the Junior Chamber of Commerce; moreover, he ably served as the mayor of McAllen from 1961 to 1963, he was appointed to the post of district court judge in 1987, and he currently serves his fellow citizens as a senior district judge; and WHEREAS, This devoted family man married the former Kathryn Nelson in 1941, and he takes immense pride in the accomplishments of his children, Robert and Barbara, and his three grandchildren; throughout his life, he has shown an abiding love of community, faith, and nation and earned the lasting respect of all who are privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend the Honorable Robert F. Barnes on his lifetime of faithful service and extend to him best wishes for continued success and happiness in all his future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Judge Barnes as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
