R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On August 15, 2003, Jesus Gabriel Chavez Sandoval
employed steely determination, hardened athleticism, and
world-class boxing skills to defeat Sirimongkol Singmanassuk of
Thailand and become the super featherweight champion of the world;
and
WHEREAS, A much admired U.S. immigrant born in Parral,
Chihuahua, Mexico, Mr. Chavez grew up in Chicago, where his father
became a naturalized citizen employed with the City of Chicago and
his mother worked as a nurse; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez earned national recognition as a student
athlete and was named Chicago's Amateur Boxer of the Year in 1989;
five years later, he moved to Austin and became a professional boxer
under the tutelage of noted trainer Richard Lord; and
WHEREAS, Tallying a career record of 40 wins and 2 losses,
Jesus "El Matador" Chavez has been widely recognized for his
athletic achievements; and
WHEREAS, In the midst of his professional success, Mr. Chavez
always remembers to give back to the community, contributing many
hours to counseling area youth for law enforcement officials and
social service professionals; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez has achieved excellence in the sport of
boxing while exemplifying a strong work ethic and good
sportsmanship, and it is a distinct privilege to commend him for
this hard-earned victory; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Jesus "El
Matador" Chavez for being the world super featherweight champion,
commend him for his contributions to the community, and extend to
him best wishes for continued success and happiness.
