R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The congregation of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in San Antonio is hosting events throughout the month of August 2003 to commemorate the 10th pastoral anniversary of the Reverend Dr. E. Thurman Walker; and WHEREAS, Since Dr. Walker assumed the pastorate, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church has flourished, and today it is home to one of the largest African American congregations in the region; its budget has tripled, and its ministries now include a Christian academy and a senior care facility, with a family life education community center to be funded by a $5 million capital campaign that is currently underway; and WHEREAS, Dr. Walker's warm, down-to-earth manner contributes to the "small church" atmosphere for the close-knit membership of 3,000-plus individuals under his spiritual leadership; and WHEREAS, Also ministering beyond the walls of his church, he founded Youth United Against Drugs and Gangs and the Community of Churches for Social Change, an interdenominational group focused on underrepresented community members; he works in behalf of the mayor's Crime Task Force, serves as honorary chairman of the Black/Jewish Dialogue Group, and chairs the city's Martin Luther King Commission; in recognition of his contributions, he has been accorded numerous honors, including being named an Outstanding Texan in the category of religion by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus; and WHEREAS, This beloved man of faith has been a blessing in the lives of countless people during his years of dedicated service to the church, and he continues to offer strength and comfort to those who seek his assistance; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby join his family, friends, and congregation in paying tribute to Dr. E. Thurman Walker on his 10th anniversary as pastor of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and extend to him best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Walker as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
