R E S O L U T I O N
	WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost an esteemed citizen with the 
passing of Fred Q. Underwood of Lubbock on August 16, 2003, at the 
age of 82; and
	WHEREAS, A prominent figure in the cotton industry, Mr. 
Underwood was born in Athens, Texas, on April 10, 1921, and  moved 
to Lubbock with his family in 1938; he graduated from the New Mexico 
Military Institute and attended Texas Tech University, where he was 
a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity; and
	WHEREAS, From 1942 to 1945, Mr. Underwood served his country 
as a flight instructor and air transport commander in the U.S. Army 
Air Corps; and
	WHEREAS, Following his discharge from the service, he 
returned to Lubbock and joined the cotton warehousing firm owned by 
his family; in the mid-1980s he and his son established their own 
warehousing concern, known as the Trinity Company, and Mr. 
Underwood served as CEO and chairman of the business until his 
retirement; today the Trinity Company serves the heart of the 
cotton-producing region of Texas, with 10 facilities operating in 
nine counties of the South Plains; and
	WHEREAS, Fred Underwood and his wife, Dale, were married on 
December 18, 1943, in Twentynine Palms, California; over the years  
the couple rejoiced as their family grew to include two children and 
three grandchildren; and
	WHEREAS, Widely respected for his integrity, his kindness, 
and his generous, unassuming nature, Mr. Underwood enjoyed a life 
rich in family, friends, and accomplishments, and his memory will 
be forever cherished by those who were privileged to share his love 
and affection; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas, 
2nd Called Session, hereby pay special tribute to the life of Fred 
Q. Underwood and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his 
family:  to his wife of 60 years, Dale Underwood; to his son, Fred A. 
Underwood and his wife, Pam; to his daughter, Shelley Underwood; to 
his grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband Robert Schwenker, Becca 
and her husband, Quinton Dickerson III, and Brett A. Underwood; to 
his sister, Mary Katherine Prather; to his sister-in-law, Louise 
Underwood; and to his many other relatives and friends; and, be it 
further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 
prepared for his family, and that when the Texas House of 
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Fred Q. 
Underwood.
