R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell recently honored Houston native Jason Santamaria with the Harrison H. Schmitt Leadership Award for Fulbright student alumni; and WHEREAS, This accomplished sixth-generation Texan was educated at St. John's School in Houston and at The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a degree in economics with high honors; he studied at Universidad Simon Bolivar in Caracas, Venezuela, as a Fulbright scholar, personally presenting to the minister of finance his research project titled "Venezuela and the United States: Free Trade in the Petroleum Sector and NAFTA"; and WHEREAS, In addition to his many notable academic achievements, Mr. Santamaria attended the U.S. Marine Corps Officer Candidate School and Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, before embarking on tours of duty in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and in Okinawa; serving as an artillery officer from 1994 to 1998, he was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for outstanding service; and WHEREAS, Mr. Santamaria is also an MBA graduate of the Wharton School of Business in Pennsylvania who has, over the years, applied his considerable talents to his work as a consultant at McKinsey & Company in Houston and as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley in New York; he is currently a successful management consultant, and in December 2003 McGraw-Hill will publish his book, The Marine Corps Way--Using Maneuver Warfare to Lead a Winning Organization; and WHEREAS, With impressive achievements in the worlds of academia, business, and military command, he is an ideal recipient of the Harrison H. Schmitt Leadership Award, an honor named after Dr. Harrison Schmitt, who has served his nation as an astronaut and U.S. senator and was a Fulbright scholar to Norway; the citizens of Texas are proud to join with Dr. Schmitt, Secretary Powell, and other members of the international affairs community in paying special tribute to the contributions of Mr. Santamaria; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Jason Santamaria on his receipt of the Harrison H. Schmitt Leadership Award and extend to him best wishes for continued success in all his endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Santamaria as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
