R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Leonard L. Holloway on August 13,
2003, at the age of 80, has deeply saddened the family and friends
of this esteemed Kerrville civic leader; and
WHEREAS, Born on March 23, 1923, in Ada, Oklahoma, Mr.
Holloway graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University and earned a
master's degree from the University of Oklahoma; in later years, he
also received an honorary doctorate and was ordained a minister;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Holloway answered his country's call to duty and
served seven years in the U.S. Air Force, fighting in World War II
and the Korean War; afterwards, he remained in the reserves for 20
years, during which time he attended the National War College, and
retired as a lieutenant colonel; throughout his service, Mr.
Holloway demonstrated courage, integrity, and dedication, earning
the Air Medal with clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, and
numerous other accolades; and
WHEREAS, The past president of Mary Hardin Baylor University
in Belton and the University of Corpus Christi, Mr. Holloway had a
distinguished career in education administration; he also served as
vice president at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and
Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, This longtime Kerrville resident and esteemed civic
leader worked tirelessly in behalf of his community as two-term
mayor of Kerrville; he generously volunteered for numerous local
boards, ably leading the Kerrville Chamber of Commerce as executive
director; an executive assistant to the H. E. Butt Foundation, Mr.
Holloway aided the Butt family in establishing Laity Lodge
Foundation Camp located in Leakey; and
WHEREAS, In addition to being a successful professional and
valued public servant, Mr. Holloway was a devoted family man, who
cherished his wife of 60 years, Betty, his two daughters, and his
four grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Holloway positively influenced the lives of his
fellow citizens, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those
individuals who were fortunate enough to have known him; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Leonard L. Holloway and extend deepest sympathies to the members of
his family: to his wife, Betty; to his two daughters and their
husbands, Sha and Tommy Cowan and Jamie and Mike Aven; to his
grandchildren, Hannah and Shane Smith, Cara Cowan, and Connor and
Sam Aven; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Leonard L.
Holloway.
