R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The city of Irving has long derived immeasurable
benefit from the civic involvement of a group of citizens formally
and fondly known as the Rat Pack; and
WHEREAS, These public-spirited individuals adopted a charter
and bylaws for the group in January 1997, but their involvement in
charitable and community causes and their close friendship with one
another extend back many years before that; the group was founded by
five couples: Pat and Meredith Bolger, Betty and Ed Fulbright,
Joyce and Douglas Gregory, Bobbie and Marvin Randle, and Doris and
Jack Spurlock; and
WHEREAS, A former longtime board member of the American
Cancer Society, Pat Bolger presently serves on the boards of the
Salvation Army and Our Children's Center at Irving and chairs the
historical markers committee for Irving's 2003 centennial
celebration; Meredith Bolger has been appointed to numerous city
panels and currently shares his expertise as a board member for the
Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau; and
WHEREAS, Also serving on the Salvation Army Board is Betty
Fulbright, whose husband, Ed, is a former captain of the Irving
Police Reserves and the Deputy Constable Reserves and the current
president of the Irving AMBUCS (American Business Clubs) chapter;
tributes to the couple include a Best Actress award for Mrs.
Fulbright from the American Cancer Society at its 2000 Hollywood
Premiere Night fund-raiser, the 2003 AMBUC of the Year award for Mr.
Fulbright, and an Irving High Spirited Citizen Award that was
bestowed on them jointly; and
WHEREAS, Joyce Gregory's longtime civic engagement includes
many years' work on the hospital fund-raiser Texasfest, while
Douglas Gregory sits on the city's planning and zoning board and the
board of the Elks' Ottine Children's Camp; they, too, have been
corecipients of the Irving High Spirited Citizen Award; and
WHEREAS, An energetic fund-raiser for the American Cancer
Society, Bobbie Randle has cochaired that organization's Hollywood
Premiere Night, together with Pat Bolger; Marvin Randle, a native
of Irving, presently serves as cochair of the city's centennial
committee and formerly served as mayor of the city and as president
of the Irving Heritage Society, chamber of commerce, and Rotary
Club; and
WHEREAS, Credit for organizing the Rat Pack goes to Jack
Spurlock, whose late wife, Doris, was a charter member as well; Mr.
Spurlock currently sits on the planning and zoning board and chairs
a group that provides specially adapted tricycles for disabled
children; a former city councilman and president of the Irving
Convention and Visitors Bureau, he has been honored as AMBUC of the
Year at the local and district levels and as Best Actor at the
American Cancer Society's 2001 Hollywood Premiere; and
WHEREAS, The Rat Pack's exceptional commitment to its
community is equally evidenced by its members' participation in
their churches and their work in local politics; for several years,
the men have also volunteered to cook fish for the large Juneteenth
celebration in the Bear Creek community; and
WHEREAS, In their unflagging desire to do good for their city
and for those in need, the members of the Rat Pack have given
unstintingly of their time, organizational talents, and seasoned
leadership, and their efforts have earned them the affection and
esteem of countless fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby honor the members of the
Irving Rat Pack for their exemplary dedication to the city of Irving
and extend to them deep appreciation for their tremendous
contributions and for the shining civic example that they all have
set.
