H.C.R. No. 22 


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The University of North Texas (UNT) is creating the Hazel Harvey Peace Professorship in children's library services, and this initiative will be a significant benefit to the people of Texas; and WHEREAS, Currently in the Lone Star State, more than 50 percent of the positions for children's librarians go unfilled and nearly 60 percent of our state's professional librarians will retire by 2019, a burgeoning gap that the Hazel Harvey Peace Professorship can help to fill; and WHEREAS, One of the nation's finest, the UNT School of Library and Information Sciences already prepares more librarians to work with children than all other programs in Texas combined, and the addition of a new professorship will enable the school to continue to provide trained and dedicated workers for our public libraries; and WHEREAS, A strong supporter of libraries, Hazel Harvey Peace has sought to broaden life's horizons for her fellowman through education; a longtime teacher, dean, and vice principal at I. M. Terrell High School in Fort Worth, this remarkable woman has also held the positions of director of student affairs at Bishop College in Dallas and editor of the Texas Standard; and WHEREAS, In addition, she has served her community through her participation on the boards of the Executive Service Corps, the Fort Worth Library & Library Foundation, Tarrant County Housing Partnership, the YWCA, and other organizations too numerous to mention; and WHEREAS, A respected educator, activist, and humanitarian, Hazel Harvey Peace is an ideal honoree for a professorship in children's library services at UNT; this project, like its namesake, will have an enduring and positive effect on children and literacy for generations to come, and it is truly worthy of special legislative recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend all those associated with the creation of the Hazel Harvey Peace Professorship in children's library services at the University of North Texas.
