R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Craig Rendon, a world geography teacher for the past
five years at Communications Arts High School in the Northside
Independent School District of San Antonio, has received one of six
honorable mentions in the 2003 Outstanding Teaching of the
Humanities Awards, sponsored by the Texas Council for the
Humanities; and
WHEREAS, A highly talented educator and motivator of young
students, Mr. Rendon is manifestly deserving of this honor, which
recognizes exceptional contributions in teaching, curriculum
development, and extracurricular programs by Texas teachers from
kindergarten through high school; and
WHEREAS, Since 2001, when the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees and the National Geographic Society began
sponsoring a poster contest to highlight World Refugee Day, Mr.
Rendon's students have won first place in the competition every
year; their work reflects a remarkable depth of understanding
regarding world events, a comprehension that has also drawn praise
from the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration in the
United States Department of State; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rendon's students consistently score extremely
well on advanced testing, placement testing, and the state's
required standardized tests; one of the most popular instructors at
his school, he captures his students' interest through a variety of
innovative approaches, all the while providing critical insight
into complex international affairs; and
WHEREAS, Born in San Antonio to a career U.S. Air Force
family, Mr. Rendon earned a bachelor's degree in government from
The University of Texas (UT) at Austin in 1994 and subsequently
taught English for three years in Japan as a member of the Japanese
Exchange and Teaching Program; he was certified as a composite
secondary social studies teacher at UT-Austin in 1997; and
WHEREAS, This gifted teacher has lived in or visited 18
foreign countries and is fluent in three foreign languages,
including Japanese; realizing that what he does in his classroom
can influence his students for years to come, he seeks above all to
broaden their perspective and to develop in them an empathy for all
their neighbors around the globe; and
WHEREAS, In an increasingly interdependent world, Craig
Rendon is furnishing his students with lessons of immeasurable
value, lessons that will both enrich their lives and help them to
engage constructively in the world they are inheriting; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Craig Rendon on
receiving an honorable mention as part of the 2003 Outstanding
Teaching of the Humanities Awards given by the Texas Council for the
Humanities and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
success in all his endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Rendon as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
