H.R. No. 41
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The State of Texas takes great pleasure in paying
tribute to the life of Colonel Juan N. Seguin, one of the foremost
heroes of the Texas Revolution, who is being honored, along with all
the heroes of the battle of San Jacinto, with the Second Annual Col.
Juan N. Seguin Memorial Picnic on October 25, 2003; and
WHEREAS, Born in what is now San Antonio on October 27, 1806,
the oldest son of Erasmo Seguin, Colonel Juan N. Seguin followed the
lead of his father by being a friend to the new settlers who came to
Texas with Stephen F. Austin; and
WHEREAS, During the years before and during the war for Texas
independence, he took charge of foraging expeditions to feed the
Texas army, joined Stephen F. Austin near San Antonio with
recruits, and fought with James Bowie at the battle of Concepción;
and
WHEREAS, Commissioned as a captain in the regular cavalry at
the beginning of 1836, Captain Seguin was in charge of the Texans'
rear guard following the fall of the Alamo; he had orders to leave
no family behind, and he helped delay the crossing of the Brazos
River by Santa Anna, thus giving Sam Houston and the Texas army time
to retreat to San Jacinto, where they ultimately made their
victorious stand; and
WHEREAS, Honorably discharged from the army with the rank of
lieutenant colonel in 1838, Colonel Seguin claimed his seat as a
senator in the second, third, and fourth congresses of the
republic; during his tenure as senator, he presented bills that
established a mail route from Austin to San Antonio and that would
have required that the laws of Texas be written in both English and
Spanish; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Juan N. Seguin has earned lasting fame for
his outstanding military and political contributions to the
establishment and development of the Republic of Texas, and he is
manifestly deserving of the respect accorded to patriots; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor the life of Colonel
Juan N. Seguin and express appreciation for his important
achievements as a Tejano hero of Texas; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Seguin Descendants Historical Preservation as an
expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
