R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A 107th birthday is truly cause for a celebration,
and on September 11, 2003, Millard Sheppard of Waco observed this
notable occasion in his life with a party in the company of his
family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sheppard was born in Wilmington, Delaware, in
1896, the year that Henry Ford built a horseless carriage that was a
forerunner of the modern automobile; he has lived through a
remarkable period of history that has spanned the 19th to the 21st
centuries and witnessed two World Wars, the Great Depression, the
advent of radio, television, and the Internet, the civil rights
movement, and countless other technological advances and
world-changing events; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sheppard was personally hired by Pierre du Pont
to work for DuPont in Wilmington, where his father was also
employed; one of his projects over the course of his 40-year career
as a designer was creating parts used in the construction of the
atomic bomb; he retired in the late 1960s; and
WHEREAS, He met his future bride, Gracie, at his church, and
the couple married in 1917 and enjoyed a rewarding relationship
until her passing in 1965; Mr. Sheppard cherishes his family that
today includes his daughter, Edna L. Hull, three grandchildren, and
four great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, At home at the Meadowlands Terrace, this esteemed
gentleman is a favorite among both staff and fellow residents; he
remains very independent and in good health and attributes his
longevity to happiness; and
WHEREAS, The birthday of Mr. Sheppard provides a fitting
opportunity to honor this beloved man who remains an inspiration to
all who are privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Millard
Sheppard on the momentous occasion of his 107th birthday and extend
to him heartfelt best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Sheppard as an expression of high esteem by the
Texas House of Representatives.
