H.R. No. 58 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The family and friends of Patti Lynch Shields of Austin suffered a great loss with the passing of this beloved woman on August 18, 2003, at the age of 55; and WHEREAS, Born in Waco, Mrs. Shields grew up in Lampasas; she attended Baylor University, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, and graduated in 1969 with a degree in education; and WHEREAS, While teaching in Copperas Cove, she began a whirlwind romance with Brad Shields, then a soldier at Fort Hood; the couple became engaged after dating for two weeks and married in June 1973; and WHEREAS, After moving to Austin with her husband, Mrs. Shields taught fifth grade at Eanes Elementary School and later taught at various other schools in the Austin area; she also enjoyed a successful career for more than 10 years as a real estate broker, during which time she became fast friends with many of her clients; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Shields loved Austin for many reasons, not the least of them being the dynamic political environment that one finds in a capital city; a longtime political activist, she assisted the campaigns of many Republican candidates, including those of George W. Bush, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Susan Combs, Barbara Culver, and Todd Baxter; in recent years she had further enjoyed the opportunity to serve as a county election judge; and WHEREAS, She also contributed to her community in a number of other ways, serving as a neighborhood reporter for the Austin American-Statesman and holding memberships in the Laguna Gloria Art Guild and the Junior League; and WHEREAS, Warm and outgoing, Mrs. Shields cherished her myriad friendships and approached life with a zest that was suffused by her deep religious faith; she was a valued congregant of Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church and a member of Priority Associates; and WHEREAS, Although Patti Shields completed her journey on this earth far too soon, those who treasured this caring and accomplished woman are deeply thankful for the immeasurable blessing of her presence in their lives, and the love they shared with her will forever light their hearts; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay special tribute to the life of Patti Lynch Shields and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her husband of 30 years, Bradford T. Shields; to her children, Brad and Jennifer Shields; to her sister, Janice Ryan; to her brother, Mike Lynch; and to her other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Patti Lynch Shields.
