R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Jesus O. Chavira, Sr., of Del Rio on August 9, 2003, at the age of 97, brought a great loss to the family and friends of this esteemed gentleman; and WHEREAS, Born May 24, 1906, in Allende, Coahuila, Mexico, Mr. Chavira came to the United States in 1921 and worked for 57 years as a contract sheep shearer to provide for his family; he supplemented his income through 20 years of employment as a seasonal migrant worker; and WHEREAS, A staunch believer in the power of education, this beloved patriarch encouraged his children to pursue college degrees, and his children and grandchildren responded by earning degrees from such respected institutions as Howard Payne University, Sul Ross State University, Southwest Texas State University, and The University of Texas at Austin; and WHEREAS, Mr. Chavira was preceded in death by his first wife, Maria de Jesus Chavira, his son, Jesus Chavira, Jr., and his grandson, Ruben Chavira; he endured these hardships with uncommon strength of character and kept these family members alive in his memories; and WHEREAS, Throughout his long and productive life, Mr. Chavira placed the needs of his family before his own, and although he will be missed by all who knew and loved him, his spirit will shine on for many years to come in the thoughts and deeds of his large and loving family; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Jesus O. Chavira, Sr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Guadalupe Chavira; to his sons, Roberto Chavira and his wife, Carmen, Mario Chavira and his wife, Sarah, and Gustavo Chavira and his wife, Hermelinda; to his children, Dora Linda Rocha and her husband, Rafael, and Rosario C. Villarreal and Arturo O. Rocha; to his 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and to the many other relatives and friends of this remarkable gentleman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jesus O. Chavira, Sr.
