R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Rear Admiral Charles David "Chuck" Grojean, USN (Ret.), one of our state's most accomplished and respected veterans, celebrated his 80th birthday on August 13, 2003; and WHEREAS, A student at the Virginia Military Institute at the dawn of World War II, Admiral Grojean decided at an early age to devote his life to the service and defense of his nation; on graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1945, he was immediately commissioned to serve aboard destroyer-class vessels and, four years later, was chosen to join the U.S. Navy submarine forces; and WHEREAS, His ascension within the ranks continued as he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and entered the nuclear power training program in 1958, at the very height of the Cold War; having successfully commanded a diesel-powered submarine, a nuclear attack submarine, and later a Polaris submarine, he was entrusted with the command of all U.S. and NATO submarines within the Mediterranean Sea; and WHEREAS, Rear Admiral Grojean, when not at sea, served with distinction at the U.S. Naval Academy and in the offices of the joint chiefs of staff and the secretary of defense; his skills as a strategist and naval commander, at both the national and international levels, later led to a three-year appointment as the U.S. Navy's director of political military policy; and WHEREAS, This highly decorated officer, who has been honored with the Meritorious Service Medal and countless campaign medals, is the recipient of Legion of Merit awards from the United States, Brazil, and Venezuela; although he is officially retired, he remains active as the executive director of the Admiral Nimitz Foundation, which is now paying tribute to his extraordinary achievements by establishing in his honor the RADM Charles David Grojean, USN (Ret.) Endowment Fund; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Rear Admiral Charles David "Chuck" Grojean on the occasion of his 80th birthday and extend to him best wishes for many more continued years of success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Admiral Grojean as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
