R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Evelyn Victor Woods Robeson on August 20, 2003, at the age of 88, has brought a profound loss to the many friends and relatives of this admirable Texan; and WHEREAS, One of 13 children born to Laura and David Victor, she came into this world on August 11, 1915, and it was during her formative years that she first learned the importance of hard work and service to others; educated at Lincoln High School in Port Arthur, she moved with her family to Houston's 5th Ward Frenchtown community in 1936; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Robeson was a devoted wife and mother who lovingly built a happy home for her husband and children; in later years she eagerly welcomed the addition of five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren into her tightly knit family; and WHEREAS, A valued member of Miles Chapel CME Church for nearly 70 years, Mrs. Robeson was an enthusiastic contributor to numerous organizations of the CME conference; she enjoyed lending her time and talents to the Missionary and Stewardess boards, the choir, and the Voices of Praise; and WHEREAS, A passionate supporter of civic responsibility, Mrs. Robeson worked with community and political leaders to promote civil rights and volunteered to register voters; and WHEREAS, Her dedication to community service also led her to become involved with the Parent Teacher Association at Charles Atherton, E. O. Smith, and Phillis Wheatley schools; in addition, Mrs. Robeson taught arts and crafts at the Julia C. Hester House, where she instructed students in quilting and ceramics; and WHEREAS, Those who had the privilege of knowing Evelyn Robeson will not soon forget the enthusiasm, compassion, and commitment she brought to every facet of her life, and, although her presence is gone from us now, her memory will live on in the hearts of the many people whose lives she touched during her years on this earth; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay special tribute to the life of Evelyn Victor Woods Robeson and extend deepest sympathy to her family: to her daughters, Gwendolyn E. Williams, Francesca Renee Williams, and Bylincia Dixon Woods; to her son, Albert E. Woods; to her stepson, Will Robeson; to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; to her sisters, Ruby Swift and Ann Stephens; and to the many other friends and relatives of this beloved woman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Evelyn Robeson.
