WHEREAS, In Alabama, Chief Justice Roy Moore has reverently
displayed, in the rotunda of the state judicial building, a
monument to the Ten Commandments on whose moral foundation our
country was founded; and
WHEREAS, The monument was removed from public view on the
order of a federal judge, under penalty of law, and Chief Justice
Moore now faces judicial misconduct complaints because of his
defense of principle; and
WHEREAS, The United States judicial system was built on the
morality reflected in the Ten Commandments, and on freedom of
speech and freedom of religion, and examples such as legislative
prayers and the national motto demonstrate ample room for
compatibility between, as well as separation of, church and state;
and
WHEREAS, Lawmakers of this chamber believe that the display
of religious beliefs, even on government property, is supportable
under the United States Constitution, and is justified by the
crucial and undeniable influence of religion on the genesis of this
nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby express its support for
Chief Justice Roy Moore of Alabama, and for any other attempt to
display the religious principles that have served long and well as
a grounding for this great nation.
