R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For more than four decades, Jose M. Amador has
dedicated himself to the betterment of agricultural practices in
the State of Texas, and the Texas House of Representatives is
pleased to pay tribute to this accomplished gentleman, who today
serves with distinction as director of both the Texas Agricultural
Experiment Station (TAES) in Weslaco and the Citrus Center at Texas
A&M University at Kingsville; and
WHEREAS, This Cuban-born scientist is an alumnus of Louisiana
State University in Baton Rouge, where he earned a bachelor's
degree in agronomy, a master's degree in plant breeding, and a
doctorate in plant pathology and biochemistry; he brought his
considerable expertise to the Rio Grande Valley soon after
graduation, working as a plant pathologist at TAES, and over the
past 40 years his efforts in preventing and curing agricultural
diseases have been of enormous benefit to farmers everywhere; and
WHEREAS, His work has earned him both international acclaim
and frequent requests for assistance; a member of the Caribbean
division of the American Phylopathological Society, which honored
him with the Fredrick L. Wellman Award, Dr. Amador was nominated by
President Bill Clinton to serve as a special consultant for the
secretary of agriculture in 1994 and 1995; in addition, Dr. Amador
has garnered many prestigious awards for his professional
achievements, including the Texas A&M University Vice Chancellor
Award in Excellence; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Amador is perhaps best known for his work as the
director of TAES and its partner agency, the Citrus Center at Texas
A&M University at Kingsville, and under his able guidance these two
organizations have made a profound and positive impact on
agricultural practices in Texas and other southern states, as well
as those in Mexico, Central America, South America, and the
Caribbean; supervising a staff of 15 scientists, 150 support staff
members, and a total budget of $3.5 million, this outstanding
administrator continues to ensure our state's place at the
forefront of agricultural research; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Jose M. Amador for
his many exceptional contributions to agricultural science in the
Lone Star State and extend to him best wishes for continued success
and happiness in all his endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Amador as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
