R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of Austin lost a beloved neighbor, friend,
and educator with the passing of Harold A. Savoy on August 2, 2003,
at the age of 62; and
WHEREAS, Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Mr. Savoy was a skilled
welder with many years of experience; through the years he worked on
such noted projects as the Seattle Space Needle, the National
Geographic Building, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, and the D.C. Metro
subway, where he became the first African American supervisor; and
WHEREAS, Innumerable students at Austin Community College
gleaned valuable lessons from this talented gentleman, who took
great pleasure in passing on the fundamentals of welding to younger
generations; a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Society, Mr. Savoy won
the admiration and respect of teachers and students alike for the
professionalism and dedication he brought to the classroom each
day; and
WHEREAS, Imbued with tremendous warmth and kindness, Harold
Savoy was a devoted family man, mentor, and friend to those who were
privileged to share his life, and while he will be greatly missed,
his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of the many people
whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Harold Savoy and extend sincere sympathy to his family: to his
wife, Nelda Ojeda Savoy; to his sons, Morrow and Harold Savoy, Jr.;
to his daughters, Celena Savoy and Clarissa Obleas; to his 12
grandchildren; to his sisters, Margaret Powell and Sylvia Macky;
and to the other relatives and many friends of this beloved
gentleman; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Harold A.
Savoy.
