H.R. No. 151
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On August 31, 2003, Dr. James G. Houston retired
from Sul Ross State University, concluding 37 years of service as a
professor of chemistry; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Houston joined the faculty of Sul Ross in 1966 as
an associate professor in the chemistry department; he served as
chair of that department for 26 years, from 1966 to 1992, and also
served as dean of graduate studies from 1971 to 1974; and
WHEREAS, An Oklahoma native and a 1960 graduate of Oklahoma
State University, Dr. Houston earned his Ph.D. in 1965 from the
Georgia Institute of Technology and was a postgraduate research
fellow at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri; and
WHEREAS, During his distinguished tenure at Sul Ross, he
advanced the role of the chemistry department to meet the needs of
the departments of geology, biology, agriculture, and criminal
justice, while maintaining and mentoring a small but dedicated
group of students majoring in chemistry; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Houston has gained the respect and admiration of
faculty and students alike for his dedication and commitment to
excellence, and he is most deserving of his recent designation as
professor emeritus of chemistry at Sul Ross State University; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Dr. James
G. Houston on the occasion of his retirement from Sul Ross State
University and extend best wishes to him for continued success and
happiness in the next chapter of his life; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Houston as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
