R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pride
in joining the battle against cancer by recognizing October 2003 as
Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer
found in women today; in 2003 alone, an estimated 13,700 Texas women
will be diagnosed with the disease and 2,600 women will die from it;
and
WHEREAS, The state's health and education professionals are
seeking to heighten women's awareness of the importance of having a
baseline mammogram and breast exam as an important first step in the
breast cancer screening process; furthermore, continued adherence
to recommended screening guidelines could significantly reduce the
mortality rate among breast cancer sufferers by at least 30
percent; and
WHEREAS, Since more than 75 percent of all breast cancers are
found in women 50 years of age and older, women are encouraged to
have a yearly mammogram and breast exam beginning at age 40, as well
as to conduct their own self-examinations on a regular basis; and
WHEREAS, Early detection is the key to surviving breast
cancer, and equipping the public with the information and means to
achieve this goal is truly a worthy endeavor; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby recognize October 2003 as
Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Texas.
