R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, October 6, 2003, is National Physician Assistant
Day, and The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in
Houston will honor these dedicated men and women with an awards
ceremony and special dinner; and
WHEREAS, The theme of Physician Assistant (PA) Day, "PArtners
in Medicine," illustrates the team concept underlying this noted
occupation, in which licensed professional PAs practice medicine as
delegated by a supervising doctor; physician assistants take
medical histories, perform physical examinations, order and
interpret lab results, diagnose and treat illnesses, suture
lacerations, assist in surgery, and write prescriptions in nearly
every state; and
WHEREAS, Able to work in a variety of settings, PAs are
employed by private practices, health maintenance organizations,
group practices, nursing homes, and hospitals; they also serve as
commissioned officers in all branches of the military, practice as
members of the White House medical team caring for the president and
vice president, and provide health care services in areas that may
lack physicians, such as inner cities and underserved rural areas;
and
WHEREAS, According to the American Association of Physician
Assistants, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in
Houston currently employs the largest number of physician
assistants in the United States, with nearly 100 PAs working in the
center; the success of this renowned facility can, in part, be
attributed to the laudable efforts of its dedicated physician
assistants; and
WHEREAS, Enhancing the health and well-being of fellow
citizens is truly a noble calling, and these committed
professionals are indeed deserving of our respect and admiration;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby recognize October 6, 2003,
as Physician Assistant Day in Texas and commend physician
assistants in the Lone Star State for their many contributions;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the physician assistants of M. D. Anderson Cancer
Center as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
Representatives.
