R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The year 2003 marks the 100th anniversary of the First Baptist Church of Purves, and this special milestone provides a fitting opportunity to recognize the church's rich heritage; and WHEREAS, The First Baptist Church was organized in October 1903 by a presbytery of three men, Brother Joe Johnson, Brother J. M. Barrett, and Brother Agee, who was chosen as the first pastor; they were joined by some 20 charter members, and in 1904, a church building was erected on land donated by Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Whisenant; and WHEREAS, Through the years, the congregation has faced many challenges, such as having its church destroyed twice by storms; each time, the worshipers courageously overcame adversity and quickly rebuilt the structures, continuing on a path toward noteworthy achievements; and WHEREAS, To accommodate the steadily growing membership, which today numbers around 100, the First Baptist Church has erected many new facilities; additions have included seven educational rooms, restrooms, a kitchen, a weekend parsonage, and a baptistry and fellowship hall; moreover, a steeple has been built to commemorate the church's 100th anniversary and to honor the congregation's oldest living member, Harlen West, who has attended this house of worship for 50 years; and WHEREAS, All those associated with the First Baptist Church of Purves are truly deserving of highest commendation for their outstanding faith and hard work, and it is a privilege to recognize this devoted congregation as it embarks on a second century of ministry; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate the First Baptist Church of Purves on its 100th anniversary and extend best wishes to its membership for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the First Baptist Church of Purves as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
